When it comes to space planning for the living room, the key is to figure out the efficient layout and the right furniture in size and style that can serve you and your lifestyle the best!
A functional and aesthetic living room design should take into account the available floor space, circulation and map out where the furniture is at the preliminary stage.
The space in between should allow traffic flow within and through the room, but avoid a cluttered atmosphere – awkward passages around furniture to interfere with each other’s activities.
01. Begin with Layout
The essential living room setup involves sofas, armchairs, coffee tables and side tables.
3’ is the minimum amount of space needed for major traffic paths.
1’6” is the minimum clearance needed for low traffic areas.
14″-18” distance between the front of a sofa or armchair, and a coffee table.
02. Get the right sofa!
Simply remember the 2:3 rule instead. The sofa should be about two thirds the size of the entire room. If you decide to add in a coffee table, that should then be two thirds the size of the sofa (if no chaise) or one third to half the size of the sofa if it has a chaise.
Obsessed with an open-concept home? The sofa featured with a huggy shape and round corners can soften the flow of the arrangement, and create an airy and soothing atmosphere with a sense of grace and coziness.

03. Add occasional seats
An eye-catching and inviting armchair can be placed at a spot to gaze out the window or next to your fireplace for a cozy reading time. You might want it to match but contrast with the sofa harmoniously? Mixing different colors and textures in a room is a great direction to go!

04. Coffee Table and Side Table
Again, a coffee table should then be two thirds the width of the sofa. The standard height of a coffee table typically ranges from 16 to 18 inches, a size that pairs well with a standard sofa. The average sofa seat height measures 17 to 18 inches from the floor to the top of the cushion. The higher the sofa is, the higher the coffee table can be. Likewise, the lower the sofa is, the lower the table should be.
Technically, side tables should fill both sides of the sofa, and one side of the armchair so that the user does not have to reach farther than necessary to grab items off the coffee table.
